The Moment of Dawn

Concerning a Rabbi's Question.

A Rabbi gathered together his students and asked them: "How do you know the exact moment when night ends and day begins?"

"When it's light enough to tell a sheep from a dog," said one boy.

Another student said "No, when it's light enough to tell an olive tree from a fig tree."

"No, that's not a good definition either."

"Well, what's the right answer?" asked the boys.

And the Rabbi said:

"When a stranger approaches, and we think he is our brother, and all conflicts disappear, that is the moment when night ends and day begins."

No Work

An old fable passed on orally.

As soon as he died, Juan found himself in a very beautiful place, surrounded by the comfort and beauty that he had dreamt of. A person dressed in white came up: "you have the right to whatever you want: any food, pleasure, fun", he said.

Delighted, Juan did everything he had dreamt of during life. After many years of pleasures, he looked for the person in white:

"I’ve already done everything I wanted to", he said. "Now I need some work, to feel useful".

"I’m very sorry", said the person in white, "but this is the only thing that I cannot get for you. Here there is no work".

"To spend eternity dying of tedium? I would prefer a thousand times to be in hell!"

The person in white came up, and said in a low voice:

"Where do you think you are?"

My Grandpa Sells Condom to Sailors

Concerning Mr. Wednesday's song.

Rained, rained, rained, and it never stopped. Well now it has. Nothing to do and no where to go. I finished reading Neil Gaiman’s Fragile Things I've been wanting to read since Wednesday.

How coincidental, today’s post is also about Wednesday. The Monarch of the Glen, the last short story in Fragile Things has Mr. Wednesday sitting in a diner singing to the tune of “My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean” to Shadow.

And it goes like this.

“My grandpa sells condom to sailors
He punctures the tips with a pin
My grandma does back-street abortions
My God how the money rolls in.”

“Rolls in, rolls in, my God how the money rolls in”

“My brother’s a missionary worker,
He saves fallen women from sin
For five bucks he’ll save you a redhead,
My God how the money rolls in.”
